80 for Brady has been doing surprisingly well among audiences, but according to Gus Kenworthy, the final cut of the movie was missing a little something.

The Olympic skier has a cameo in the movie, which follows four friends (Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field) as they embark on a journey to the Super Bowl to meet Tom Brady. Kenworthy plays the boyfriend of Brian Jordan Alvarez, but says the film was initially supposed to include a makeout sesh between the two — something that doesn’t appear in the theatrical release.

“They said they cut it for time, but I think they cut it for Middle America,” he told Variety at the recent Gold Meets Golden benefit. “Release the tapes! See if you can get that trending.”

He went on to explain that they shot the scene in question “four or five times where we would just ad-lib insults at each other and then make out.”

“Some of them got raunchy,” he added.

At this point, we might as well have an actual database of movies and TV shows that filmed gay kiss scenes but opted not to include them in the final cut. Pitch Perfect 3, Scooby-Doo, Valley Girl (yes, the remake), and even Legends of Tomorrow (which, okay, gets a pass for all the other gay kisses it spotlighted over the years) all immediately come to mind as examples.

Although plot points and scenes getting edited out for time is certainly common in movies, the frequency with which same-sex affection seems to be on the chopping block — especially relative to how rarely those scenes actually make it to production in the first place — gives credibility to Kenworthy’s suggestion that this was more about making it palatable for middle America. Or rather, doing what the studios might think would be more palatable for middle America.

Now the question becomes whether or not the scene will make it to the eventual DVD release — but it would be nice if these moments, even in a comedy, weren’t relegated to bonus content on a good day.
