The Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations are here, and so, so queer.

This year's nominations were announced earlier today by past nominees Raúl Castillo (We Are Animals) and Taylour Paige (Zola). For the first time ever, this year's acting categories are gender-neutral and will no longer be divided into women and men.

Leading the pack is this year's breakout sci-fi action dramedy Everything Everywhere All At Once with eight nominations, including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Lead Performance for Michelle Yeoh, and Best Breakthrough Performance for Stephanie Hsu's earth-shattering queer character, Joy.

Tár, Todd Field’s drama about a lesbian German music conductor, landed seven nominations including Best Lead Performance for Cate Blanchett.

Bones and All, Luca Guadagnino's bloody reunion with Timothée Chalamet, received three nominations including Best Feature.

Queer Gen Z slasher pic Bodies Bodies Bodies landed two nominations, including Best First Screenplay and Best Director for Halina Reijn.

Comedian Joel Kim Booster also secured a Best First Screenplay nomination gay Hulu rom-com Fire Island. "It’s going to be a pleasure losing to Bodies Bodies Bodies," he joked on Twitter.

Hollywood star Jeremy Pope landed a Best Lead Performance nomination for his role as a closed military recruit in the Don't Ask Don't Tell era in A24's drama The Inspection.

All in all, incredible year for LGBTQ+ representation in independent film!

The TV nominations will be announced by Billions star Asia Kate Dillon on December 13. You can watch the Independent Spirit Awards ceremony on March 4, 2023.

Where can I watch Independent Spirit Awards?

This past year's ceremony aired live on IFC, streamed live on AMC+, and is now available to stream on HBO Max. It's unclear how the 2023 ceremony will air.

Did the Independent Spirit Award eliminate gendered categories?

Yes! Ahead of its 2023 ceremony, the Independent Spirit Awards made their acting categories gender neutral for the first time, meaning all nominees live together in one category.
