Kesha's had quite the journey leading up to her Billboard Music Awards performance last night, and — though she coudn't legally discuss it onstage — it shined in the most powerful way. Alongside Ben Folds on piano and a fantastic violinist, Kesha performed a striking, heartfelt cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me, Babe." The fact that this simple, stripped performance was so controversial might seem shocking to some, but to many others it was an epic celebration of Kesha's work as an artist and as a woman who's been through a deeply disturbing time.

Kesha's legal struggle with Sony and Dr. Luke — whom she alleged sexually and psychologically abused her — has been in the forefront of entertainment news this year as she fails to legally break free of her contract with Sony and Dr. Luke. Dr. Luke's record label, Kemosabe, even barred her from performing at first, thinking she might use the stage as a platform to discuss her case. When she assured them she wouldn't, she was allowed to perform. Here's why we should all be thankful for that:

Kesha's intimate, soul-baring, sweet/sorrowful performance earned her a standing ovation and brought us to tears. We've all missed watching Kesha perform live, and this was truly a momentous and powerful occasion. Kesha continues to be a talent we can't miss out on and a beautiful person we deeply admire.
