Parents Kathy Witterick and David Stocker, of Toronto Canada, have decided not to disclose the anatomical makeup of their 4 month old child, Toronto Star reports.
“We’ve decided not to share Storm’s sex for now – a tribute to freedom and choice in place of limitation, a stand up to what the world could become in Storms’ lifetime (a more progressive place?),” the couple wrote in an email to friends and family.
Storm’s brothers, Jazz, 5, and Kio, 2, aren’t confined to society’s gender rules either. If you haven’t noticed, they weren’t given typical gender associated names. They are also allowed to cut their hair, or grow it out, and they can pick their clothes from the boys and girls sections of stores.
In this situation, where the parents don’t want the gender to be a factor, all people seem to discuss is the lack thereof. By not disclosing the anatomical makeup of their child, is the couple doing more harm than good? Or is it that society is just not comfortable with an “unknown” floating around out there? Does everything need a label?
“If you really want to get to know someone, you don’t ask what’s between their legs,” says Stocker.
