5 Queer Things Paper Magazine Taught Us About Miley Cyrus
Paper Magazine just published a cover and an interview with Miley Cyrus. In the interview, they talked about Happy Hippie, gender and sexual identity. Here are five new things we learned about Cyrus:
1. "Yo, I'm down with any adult — anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me."
She implied that she's open to anything and everything, as long as the person is of consenting age. Cyrus says she "doesn't relate" to being a boy or a girl, and doesn't mind if her partner doesn't either.
2. She recalls confessing to her mother, at age 14, that she had romantic feelings toward women.
Cyrus says she remembers telling her mother that she "admired" women in a different way. Her mother was confused about what she meant at first, but then Cyrus told her "I love them like I love boys." Her mother was worried because she didn't want her "to go to Hell," but Cyrus says her mother accepts her fluid sexuality.
3. She was raised Christian, but does not understand fundamentalists who rally against LGBT issues.
"Those people [shouldn't] get to make our laws," she says. Cyrus believes that way of thinking is outdated, especially those who "believe that, say, Noah's Ark was a real seafaring vessel." In addition, Cyrus thinks that those are outgrown fairy tales: "We've outgrown that fairy tale, like we've outgrown fucking Santa and the tooth fairy."
4. The issue of LGBT homelessness became too important for her to ignore.
She acknowledges that she lives a privileged life, and doesn't understand how other people who have the platform of celebrity don't use it for good. "I can't drive by in my fucking Porsche and not fucking do something," she says. She can't get over the experience of seeing people driving Bentley's just driving past homeless vets or young women who've been raped. Mid-performance, she had a moment of clarity:
"I was doing a show two nights ago, and I was wearing butterfly nipple pasties and butterfly wings. I'm standing there with my tits out, dressed like a butterfly. How the fuck is that fair? How am I so lucky?"
5. She says she's had romantic relationships with women that were just as serious as the ones with men.
She's been connected to Liam Hemsworth, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Nick Jonas in gossip magazines, and Cyrus said she's had similar serious relationships with women, but she never "brought it into the spotlight."
