Meryl Streep Comes For Trump In Powerful Golden Globes Speech

Leave it to Meryl to make us all feel at least a little bit better about the future.

Meryl Streep may not have had much of a voice at the Golden Globes on Sunday, but wow did she raise it. Upon being awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement, Meryl (who indeed literally lost her voice) decided to confront 2017's biggest concern -- Donald Trump, his treatment of others, and how it might inspire people to act - for better or worse. Without every once saying his name, Meryl's gorgeous, fearless speech detailed the dangers and powers of priviledge and the responsibility performers have to achieve and inspire empathy. She started by pointing out that many of the nominated actors at the ceremony were originally from other countries, led us into an emotional recap of some of the worst parts of last year, and ended by bringing tears of love to our eyes. Watch here:

If you weren't already getting choked up when you realized Meryl was not about to hold back on saying what many of us are feeling about this year's political climate, that last quote from her "friend, the dear departed Princess Leia" likely required a trip to get tissues. The next four years are going to require a lot of strength, resilience and action,  and Meryl just gave us a beautiful example. We'll listen and learn.
