As you likely know, Moonlight earned its place in cinematic history last night at the 89th Academy Awards as the first queer film to take home Best Picture. The story is—and will continue to be—a landmark for black, queer communities, and we can only hope its success will continue to afford opportunities to more storytellers to widen the narrative of LGBTQ life in mainstream cinema.
We wish that could be the whole story, but it's just... not. Before the cast and crew of the film walked onstage to accept the award, the folks from La La Land were mopping up tears and running through the acceptance speeches they would later give the press, having mistakenly been announced the winner.
