Billy Eichner fans, celebrate!
Yesterday, Deadline broke the news that Eichner is set to write and star in a romantic comedy for Universal.
The as-of-yet untitled film will “center around two men who have commitment problems and are attempting a relationship.”
A gay romantic comedy.
For Universal.
While movies focusing on LGBTQ characters are on the rise, they’re largely still historical and/or tragic and/or really, really low budget. Very rarely are they “normal,” non-Oscar bait films taken on by major studios.
Eichner took to Twitter to celebrate after Deadline’s announcement.
“Excited, terrified, completely in shock and PROUD as hell to announce this movie,” he wrote.

He was still riding high before the State of the Union address, joking that “If Trump doesn’t mention my movie, I’ll be furious.”
The film is set to be produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Nick Stoller, who is known for directing Neighbors and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Universal, of course, is known for never releasing the confirmed-filmed kiss between Beca and Chloe from Pitch Perfect 3.
But a new gay rom-com is a start. A start, Universal.
