The critically-acclaimed Brazilian queer moviePrivate Desert is getting a U.S. theatrical release in 2022.

This new LGBTQ+ film tells the story of Sara (played by Pedro Fasanaro), a nonbinary person who meets Daniel (Antonio Saboia) online and starts an intense long-distance relationship with him.

Sara, a blue-collar worker who still presents as their male identity by day, and Daniel, a teacher in a police academy, fall in love as they exchange messages online. But one day, Sara disappears – prompting Daniel to drive 2,000 miles across Brazil as he searches for his missing lover.

This romantic and emotional film was written by Henrique dos Santos, as well as co-written and directed by Aly Muritiba. In 2021, Private Desert was chosen as Brazil’s submission to compete in the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film category at the 2022 Oscars.

The film was released last year in Brazil, it is now finally coming to select cities in the United States. Private Desert is set for its U.S. premiere in New York City in August, followed by Los Angeles in September. Other cities are expected to be added soon.

While Brazil does embrace its LGBTQ+ artists and media it’s also incredibly dangerous for queer people to live in. So, it’s a true testament to the greatness of Private Desert that the film was selected as the country’s submission for the 2022 Oscars.

Private Deserts premieres in the U.S. on August 26 at the Quad Cinema in New York City and on September 9 at the Laemmle Theaters in Los Angeles, followed by other select cities.
