Pope Francis Stumps for Equal Pay for Women During Weekly Speech
During his weekly speech in St Peter's Square today, Pope Francis condemned the widespread discrepancy between men's and women's wages. These comments were the Pope's most decisive yet on the subject of gender equality, according to The Huffington Post.
"Why is it taken for granted that women must earn less than men [when] they have the same rights?” he asked those assembled. “As Christians, we must become more demanding in this regard: for example, [by] supporting with decision the right to equal retribution for equal work. Disparity is a pure scandal."
The pontiff also touched on women's rights in last week's address, insisting that “the image of the ‘rib’ does not in any way express inferiority or subordination”. He went on to criticize the “negative excesses of patriarchal cultures [and] multiple forms of machismo”.
Despite these statements, the Pope sadly continues to forbid women from becoming priests – although he claims he wants them to be more involved in the church.
