The city of Vienna is celebrating the Eurovision Song Contest and the AIDS charity event Life Ball in a most inclusive way, with traffic signals displaying figures that represent same-sex couples holding hands instead of the usual solitary pedestrian of indeterminate gender.
“The city of Vienna is setting a signal for openness and tolerance,” Deputy Mayor Maria Vassilakou said in a statement to NBC News.
The lights have been installed at 49 intersections, NBC reports; some display a male couple, some a female one. City spokesman Andreas Baur said their primary purpose is to reduce accidents, but they also honor Eurovision, to be held in Vienna May 23, and Life Ball, which takes place in the city Saturday.
Eurovision, long popular with LGBT audiences, saw bearded drag performer Conchita Wurst emerge as its winner last year. Life Ball, held annually at Vienna’s City Hall, is one of the largest AIDS fundraising events in the world.
