Long-time activist David Mixner compiled a list of the Twenty Most Powerful Lesbians in American Politics and many of our favorites have made the cut.

In order to create the list,Mixnerdecided to eliminate anyone from the entertainment and sports community and focused solely on national politics and grassroots.

A political lesbian list just wouldn't be the same without the always prolific and compelling Rachel Maddow, who tops Mixner's list at number one. Her groundbreaking MSNBC show has garnered the watchful eye of liberals and conservatives alike, snagging millions of loyal viewers in the process.

Pam Spaulding from Pam's House Blend rose to number four on the lesbian list of powerful women, likely due to her unprecedented take on transgender topics and influentially blogging her finely tuned thoughts for diehard liberals everywhere.

Mayor Annise Parker made the list at number seven and this is no surprise because as the first openly lesbian mayor, she has already made great strides in the great LGBT community of Houston, Texas.

Urvashi Vaid saw the importance of including our youth in the National Equality March and is respected for her powerful role in activism and astounding presence in the LGBT community. She makes the power list at number nine.

Robin McGeehee makes number twelve after her protesting skills at the White House and she, of course, co-founded and co-chaired "Get Equal." This powerful woman is a first rate organizer.

Kerry Eleveld, the Advocate's very own Washington correspondent, took her seat at number eleven. Her 15 years in journalism savvy and White House access gives us reason to appreciate this talented political starlet.

Kate Kendall comes in at number fifteen for her great strides as CEO of the National Council for Lesbian Rights (NCLR). Kendall has championed some of the pioneering legal legislation to protect lesbians in America, including her incessant devotion to defeating Prop 8.

We give a heartfelt thanks to all twenty of these women that work diligently in the ongoing fight for equality!
