The State Department announced this week that transgender Americans and mid-transition patients will be issued passports as long as proper documentation or proof of surgery from a physician is provided, The Cable is reporting.
When applying for a passport, you will be required to bring a note from your doctor confirming "appropriate clinical treatment for gender transition." If you're transitioning, you can obtain a "limited-validity passport" until the process is complete.
The policy marks the State Department’s commemoration of Pride month. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a statement saying, "Human rights are the inalienable right of every person, no matter who that person is or who that person loves."
