Amazon.com is no longer selling a controversial calendar by antigay cartoonist Joe King after several bloggers and LGBT organizations lobbied the online retailer to pull the item.
The calendar, "I'm Not Gay, I'm Just a Sissy: 12 Months of Sexual Confusion," was also pulled from Barnes & Noble on Wednesday. Amazon.com has not commented, but the item is no longer available. As of Thursday, more than 800 people gave 1-star reviews to King's calendar, condemning the sale of the item, and asking for it to be pulled from Amazon.com.
The self-proclaimed "Christian Cartoonist's," illustrated calendar shows stereotypical images of LGBT people, specifically gay men and transgender women, according to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The calendar also mocks people living with HIV and AIDS.
Daily Kos reports that after the calendar became subject to a petition for removal, King took to his Facebook page to sound off.
"Hoo-we! Hell hath no fury like a he/she scorned... The telephone tree of tantrums is lit up like a Las Vegas marquee for "Boy-Lesque" today with hate mail, threats of boycott and even the risk of Jesus spitting on me for my "Sissy" calendar. I SAID I WAS A SISSY UP FRONT. Ironic who the real bullies are isn't it? Let's see if I get a call from Oprah's people or even Anderson Cooper..."
He added, "The "truth" is that AIDS is an "elective" disease. It STOPS the day guys quit sticking it to each other. And for the tragedy of women and children infected... THAT stops the day their gay husbands and fathers stop cheating on them. Anyone need MORE education, science or funding to understand THAT?"
