What started out as a regular international friendly between the US Women and the Korea Republic squad, turned out to be a record setting performance for the 18,000-plus crowd that turned out on Thursday night for the evening match at New Jersey’s Red Bull arena.

Forward Abby Wambach netted four goals in the first 30 minutes of play to surpass the legendary Mia Hamm as the all-time leading scorer in international women’s soccer.

The US went on to win the match 5-0, but it was all about Wambach as fans from all over rejoiced when she scored her 160th career goal.  Hamm now stands in second place with 158.

Coincidentally, it was Wambach’s first four goal game in her career, but her 39th multi-goal game, which catapulted her over Hamm as multi-goal game leader as well.

With the win, the US carries an 8-0-2 record into their brief hiatus for summer.  They are scheduled to return to action in September.

US Women’s Soccer put together a two minute long tribute video in honor of Wambach’s historic achievement.  Check it out below!
