10 Last-Minute Queer Halloween Costumes That Aren't Totally Lame
So here you are, scrambling for an idea for a Halloween costume.
You promised yourself last year that you wouldn't wait until the eleventh hour to create a festive, spooky outfit because you were jealous that your friends served these fabulous, cool, colorful, over-the-top looks and all you did was tie some fabric around your waist. Well, for whatever reason, you're back on your BS and in desperate need of a costume that makes it look like you actually have your shit together. Luckily for you, we're here to help out!
Here are 10 last-minute, queer AF Halloween costumes that aren't totally lame.
Ally from 'A Star Is Born'
If you weren't a procrastinator, you could have probably recreated a bunch of the fiercer looks from Lady Gaga's critically-acclaimed feature film debut A Star Is Born. But if you're short on time and have to get a culturally relevant costume idea out quick, grab a cheap brown wig from Party City, a leather jacket (you probs already have one; if not, borrow one), and tape a bag of peas from your local grocery store's freezer aisle to your knuckles, and you'll soon be channeling your inner Ally.
Wynonna from 'Wynonna Earp'
Another costume you can use a brown wig and a leather jacket for is the titular heroine in SyFy's popular (and super queer) show Wynonna Earp. Trade in Ally's peas for the fiery sword she was yielding in the season 3 finale, and you've got a super specific costume that people will surely be asking you all about.
Officer Nicole Haught from 'Wynonna Earp'
Let's be real: you were probs thinking about dressing up as something easy and thoughtless for Halloween, right? A costume you can find in literally any superstore anywhere—like a cop? Well, just add a gold nametag and a cowboy hat to it and you can now tell people that you're Officer Nicole Haught (one of our fave lesbian characters on TV right now)! The best part is, people will think you're a little less lazy when you explain your costume to them at that Halloween party you didn't really want to go to! :D
Troye Sivan in the "My My My!" music video
Do you have a white tank top, a black button-down shirt, and some black pants? Congrats. You also have all the makings of a costume inspired by the music video for queer pop king Troye Sivan's track "My My My!" Make sure to leave your shirt unbuttoned and to add copious amounts of mousse in your hair to get Troye's wet look! (And if you want to look extra shiny all Halloween day and night, pop some highlighter on your cheekbones.)
Hayley Kiyoko in the "Curious" music video
Another queer pop icon that you could also possibly dress up as for Halloween is none other than Lesbian Jesus herself, Hayley Kiyoko! To rock her "Curious" look, just grab a blonde wig, some green pants, and a green Hawaiian shirt. If you personally don't have a green Hawaiian shirt, you probably know someone (or someone's dad) that you can borrow one from.
A Las Encinas student from Netflix's 'Élite'
You probably already have a dark blazer and matching pants (or skirt) in your closet already! Just add some red trim (using either fabric paint or some red duct tape), get your hands on a red tie, print out the Las Encinas logo, tape it to the front of your jacket, and BAM! You're now a student at Spain's most bougie, drama-filled private school. You can now pretend to be a part of the beautiful, queer, murderous social circle from Netflix's Élite for a day.
Sidenote: if you happen to have an old Warbler costume from Glee lying around somewhere, you can literally use that for this Halloween look and no one would know the difference....
Adam Rippon at the 2018 Academy Awards
If you have a dark-colored suit but don't want to permanently alter it for an Élite-inspired costume, why not try adding a harness underneath the jacket. Once you do, you can say you're Adam Rippon on the red carpet of the 2018 Oscars (it worked out for Gus Kenworthy)! All you literally need is a bowtie and a harness to complete the look. If you don't want to spend big bucks on a harness, you can watch one of the many DIY tutorials on YouTube and make your own!
Simon Spier from 'Love, Simon'
Love, Simon was probably one of the best gay rom-coms to be released in the past few years, so who better to dress up as for Halloween than as Simon Spier himself! Grab your sherpa-lined denim jacket (if you're a part of the LGBTQ+ community, I guarantee you know at least one person who could loan you one), and another cheap wig from Party City (if you're not already a brunette), and you're good to go. I know, I know. This is a post about costumes that aren't supposed to be lame (a denim jacket and a wig totally falls under "lame" territory), but it's your fault for waiting until the last minute!! Beggars can't be choosers!!
Steven from 'Steven Universe'
Steven Universe is probably one of the queerest animated TV series ever made, and while it would actually take some time and effort to dress up in one of the queer Crystal Gems' beautiful, intricate outfits, it literally takes not much of anything to dress up as the titular hero Steven. Use some yellow fabric paint to draw a big yellow star on a plain red t-shirt, then grab some jeans (make sure to cuff the legs up to your ankles!) and a pair of flip flops and you are literally good to go. If you have the time to make Steven's signature shield out of some cardboard and paint, you definitely should! (But let's be honest, if you're reading this list, your procrastinating ass probably doesn't have that kind of time...)
Ariana Grande's "No Tears Left to Cry" cover art
There are an infinite number of ways to recreate Ariana's instantly iconic (and so, so queer) rainbow-colored cover art for the "No Tears Left to Cry" single! Most of them won't even make you break the bank! All you need is some drugstore makeup, some patience, and a few minutes to spare to watch some YouTube tutorials.
