THE Look: Burning Man

Taking place in Nevada’s beautiful, remote and mostly inhospitable Black Rock Desert, Burning Man is a thriving temporary artistic metropolis that is based on principles such as radical inclusion, self-reliance, self-expression, and then leaving no trace behind in the desert environment.

I have always wanted to feel freer in self-expression. When I was growing up, I cared a lot about fitting in and being well-liked. I made my clothing decisions based on that as well. I wore what everyone else was wearing because I wanted to seem cool and hip, even though in hindsight, those looks were terrible!

I realize that you might think, "Well, he hasn’t grown much—he still wears all black every day". In fact, it’s quite the opposite. I get a lot of backlash for wearing a uniform consisting of mostly black and some gray tones. But I feel really comfortable and, shocking to some, self-expressed. I hope this year's trip to Burning Man will help me even more. I cannot wait to put together some looks that make me feel free. I have included some photos to show you what I’ve been thinking so far.

The Look

Drifter Poncho: This poncho is heavy to protect from strong wind gusts and sand flying everywhere. It comes equipped with a massive hood. The openings on the side keep me cool because a nice breeze can still pass on through.

Face Mask: for obvious reasons and a badass look.

Mr. Turk Swimwear: I have a thing for these bathing suits. I feel like they are sexy and yet extremely appropriate. They show off the right amount of skin while leaving some mystery.

Tevas: I’m not one for a sandal, but I’m really feeling these. They are extremely comfortable, and I am all about that when out for hours exploring flat desert terrain.

Additional options for your look:

Sunnies: Because, after all, I am in the desert.

Denim Shorts: I have always envied men who can wear short-shorts and feel confident. Because for me this trip is about expressing myself, I am finally giving them a chance. I paired them with a vintage tee, which is so old it is practically see-through. We are in the hottest terrain on earth during the day, so I think almost tissue-thin material is the way to go.

The Look

Desert Scarf: I added a scarf to be a versatile part of the look. Easily wrapped around your head, waist, neck, or face, this can be a multipurpose tool to protect you from sun exposure and Burning Man's sudden and notorious dust storms.

I hope to see you out on the playa at Burning Man 2015 rocking your own unique look!
