The bromance between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk looks to be well and truly over.
What started with Musk openly criticizing the mega spending bill that will fund the Trump administration’s legislative agenda, calling it a "disgusting abomination,” has devolved into Musk writing that “Trump would have lost the election,” without him and that President Donald Trump “is in the Epstein Files,” and calling for his impeachment, while the MAGA leader seems to be threatening to end Musk’s government contracts.
Bottom line: It’s messy.
The war between the two powerful men started with Musk taking to X to rant about the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” that the Trump administration has been trying to pass. ”I’m sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination," Musk wrote. "Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
This came amid a flurry of posts from Musk, where he openly admonished Republicans for voting for the bill which the Trump administration claims will decrease the federal deficit, but Democrats have said will only serve to raise it while cutting social services like Medicaid.
In response to Musk’s online outbursts, Trump signaled the end of their political alliance when he told reporters in the Oval Office that “Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore.”
Just a short time later, Musk took to X once again to call Trump a loser who only beat former President Joe Biden because he had Musk’s money and backing. “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate,” Musk said. “Such ingratitude.”
Musk spent $288 million on Trump’s election campaign, and until recently, the two men have been joined at the hip as Musk helped him campaign, attended his inauguration (where he rallied the crowd with a Nazi salute), and held court alongside Trump at the White House as the head of DOGE. But now Musk and Trump are holding nothing back in their war against each other.
Of course, Trump couldn’t let Musk’s remarks stand so now the two men are battling it from the social media sites they each own. Trump wrote on Truth Social that the “easiest way to save money” would be to “terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.” Musk fired back from X, “Go ahead, make my day.”
Musk and Trump have gone full scorched earth on their relationship, but Musk started his rant about the “Big Beautiful Spending Bill” without using Trump’s name and only making oblique references to the president, though it was still obvious who he was talking about since the president has spent weeks whipping the vote and making veiled threats against any Republican congresspeople who oppose the bill.
On June 5, things seemed to reach a boiling point when Trump wrote on Truth Social that “Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave.” In response, Musk decided it was “time to drop a really big bomb” on X, writing that Trump “is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public,” implying that Trump has a connection to Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges and was accused of sexual abuse of underage girls.
This very public breakup between Musk and Trump is causing people across the internet to roast the MAGA president and Musk for a divorce that seemingly is in the air.
Gay Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia tagged Musk in a post where he pointed out that “the only people who voted for this bill were House Republicans.” Someone else asked, "Are men maybe too emotional for positions of leadership?” while another person joked, "Who gets custody of Joe Rogan?”
