Alan Cumming's New CBS Show Is Making History

CBS broke new ground earlier this month with the release of Instinct, a political intelligence thriller starring acting legend Alan Cumming.

The show is based on the novel of the same name by prolific author James Patterson and focuses on Cumming's character, Dr. Dylan Reinhard, a former CIA operative turned university professor, who is also gay and married—making Patterson's character the first gay lead for an hour-long television broadcast EVER. 

"He's a fuddy-duddy professor, but he's a former sort of CIA spy. He rides a motorbike, but he's kind of a dandy," said 53-year old bisexual Cumming during an interview with CBS News. "He used to be a child musical prodigy. He's gay. It's the first-ever network drama to have a gay character as a lead." 

Cumming, went on to state the importance both professional and personal in playing such a historic character, and he hopes the series will help normalize same-sex relationships.
