Tyler Posey & Avan Jogia Loved Playing Gay in 'Now Apocalypse'

"I've always wanted to promote that and be a part of that world..."

STARZ's newest series Now Apocalypse is, to put it bluntly, superhumanly gay.

The Gregg Araki directed show centers on four twenty-somethings living in Los Angeles clamoring for love, sex, and fame. Avan Jogia plays Ulysses, whose ominous name foreshadows the monstrous journey he's about to embark on. The struggling actor is plagued with nightmares that might just be signaling the end of the world.

Since Ulysses is openly gay, Jogia is currently starring in one of the few TV shows on air with a leading LGBTQ character. But don't expect any coming out stories here—Now Apocalypse's cast of characters embrace their sexualities head on.

"It's a testament to the type of characters Gregg [Araki, show creator] wants to put into the world and talk about the spectrum of sexuality and how diverse sexuality is," Jogia told PRIDE. "It's not just A and B, there's so many shades. And we want to box people in. We want to say, 'You have to do this, you have to only do this. As soon as you sleep with this kind of person, that's the only kind of person you sleep with.' I've always felt that doesn't make any sense to me. Gregg's movies have always embraced that, so I think that's really interesting."

Jogia believes the show is an accurate, though some might say hyperbolized, representation of that twenties struggle bus.

"The first couple years in LA, it's like this. You're meeting people, you're sleeping with people, you're at some party in the hills, you have no idea what's going on, you're rolling through your own identity. I think that's an accurate portrait of anyone in their twenties, but especially Los Angeles where there's so many big personalities."

Tyler Posey plays Gabriel, one of Ulysses' love interests. Following his bisexual character on CW's Jane The Virgin, Posey says he's hyped to tackle more LGBTQ roles.

"I agreed to do them because I wanted to," he explained. "I just haven't had too many opportunities come up to me. I've always wanted to promote that and be a part of that world and I just never really had the opportunities come up to me. I finally did and they were in great projects I could be really proud of."

Posey, who gained many queer fans from his platonic chemistry with Dylan O'Brien in MTV's Teen Wolf, hopes the Scott and Stiles shippers will love the show.

"Stiles and Scott shippers, or anyone who shipped anyone on Teen Wolf, just loved the show enough and loved us enough to be proud of us no matter where we go," he said. "I hope they're happy."

Now Apocalypse premieres Sunday, March 10 on STARZ.
