Netflix's most controversial original series, 13 Reasons Why, is gearing up for a fourth and final season.
The one-hour teen drama began in 2017 with Hannah Baker dying by suicide and leaving thirteen audiotapes behind for the people who wronged her, detailing why she took her own life. The premise has been slammed as irresponsible and potentially dangerous by psychologists for at-risk teens, but the ratings continued to soar and the series has become one of Netflix's most successful projects.
Over the years, the streaming giant has attempted to correct some of their mistakes by adding trigger warnings before every episode, fleshing out some of the tougher topics they handle like rape and consent, and removing Hannah's grisly death scene completely. It still remains problematic and graphic violence is still littered throughout the series, but it has started some powerful conversations about suicide and rape culture especially.
Last season, the gang collectively covered up the murder of their classmate and serial rapist, Bryce Walker. Season 4's official description reads:
"In the series' final season, Liberty High School's Senior Class prepares for graduation. But before they say goodbye, they'll have to keep a dangerous secret buried and face heartbreaking choices that could impact their futures forever."
The final season of 13 Reasons Why premieres June 5 on Netflix. Watch the trailer below.
