The ladies are having quite a year at USA Network since the network ordered 11 episodes in addition to the 90-minute pilot of the drama series Facing Kate, starring lesbian favorite and The L Word vet Sarah Shahi.

Along with the Piper Perabo starrer Covert Affairs, this means that USA is launching not one, but two new series - both female-centric. In 2009, the network's two new series both featured male leads (Royal Pains and White Collar).

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the launch schedules for Covert Affairs and Facing Kate are still being worked out, but will most likely follow the same pattern as the 2009 new series by premiering in summer and the fourth quarter, respectively.

Facing Kate focuses on top litigator Kate Reed (Shahi), who is frustrated with the bureaucracy and injustice she sees in the legal system and chooses to become the ultimate anti-lawyer: a mediator.

Jeff Wachtel, USA president of original programming and UCP co-head,  said the network tends to avoid franchises, but liked the different approach to a legal drama with a mediator.

"This is someone who lives in a world of a constant conflict," he said. "With traditional lawyers, it's always one wins, one loses; in mediation, the goal is to have win-win."

Created by Michael Sardo (Caroline in the City), the series co-stars include Michael Trucco, Virginia Williams and Baron Vaughn.  Sardo, who wrote the project on spec, will run the series as well as executive produce with Steve Stark of Steve Stark Prods.
