5 Things I Learned About Myself as a Bisexual Trans Man

There are plenty of stigmas that exist for both transgender and bisexual people. I happen to be trans and bisexual. In my journey, I've overcome a lot of obstacles; those trans people experience and those bisexuals experience. And, I learned about myself as a transgender man who identifies as bisexual. Here are five things being trans and bi taught me.

1. Bisexuality Is an Evolving Term

The first time I came out, before I understood my gender identity, I identified as bisexual. Throughout my transition, my sexual orientation changed. I thought I was pansexual but that term didn't feel right. For me, bisexuality is whatever I want it to be; it's an evolving term and a sliding scale.

2. Gender Dysphoria Is Constant

For some time, I wondered if being sexual with different body types would cause me to feel different levels of gender dysphoria. Like many trans men, I expereince bottom dysphoria in different ways with all partners, but the intensity of my gender dysphoria is constant.

3. I Prefer Bisexual Partners

Regardless of my relationship dynamic, I prefer to date other bisexual people. I love not worrying about whether or not someone views my body as "male" because, from my experience, bi people don't obsess over body parts.

4. I'm Attracted to Many Types of People

I've had friends and family members tell me that bi people take away potential partners from gay and straight people. Since sexuality isn't a choice, I don't see it as being selfish and I believe it's more like ... I'm lucky. I'm fortunate to be attracted to all bodies and genders, which makes my pool of potential partners much bigger.

5. I'm Not Secretly Gay

Only 28% of bisexuals are public about their sexual orientation, compared to 71% of lesbians and 77% of gay men. The numbers are even smaller among bisexual men; only 12% said they were out. These numbers tend to represent cisgender people.
