SΓ‘enz has shared the first three chapters of the long-awaited novel exclusively with PRIDE.com ahead of it's October 12, 2021 release. Take a breath, prepare your squeals, and check out the first look below:
OneΒ
And here he was, Dante, with his head resting on my chest. In the stillness of the dawn, there was only the sound of Danteβs breathing. It was as though the universe had stopped whatever it was doing just to look down on two boys who had discovered its secrets.Β Β
As I felt the beating of Danteβs heart against the palm of my hand, I wished I could somehow reach into my chest and rip out my own heart and show Dante everything that it held.Β
And then there was this: Love didnβt just have something to do with my heartβit had something to do with my body. And my body had never felt so alive. And then IΒ knew, I finally knew about this thing called desire.Β Β
TwoΒ
I hated to wake him. But this moment had to end. We couldnβt live in the back of my pickup forever. It was late, and already it was another day, and we had to get home, and our parents would be worried. I kissed the top of his head. βDante? Dante? Wake up.βΒ Β
βI donβt ever want to wake up,β he whispered.Β
βWe have to go home.βΒ
βIβm already home. Iβm with you.βΒ
That made me smile. Such a Dante thing to say.Β Β
βCβmon, letβs get going. It looks like rain. And your motherβs going to kill us.βΒ
Dante laughed. βShe wonβt kill us. Weβll just get one of her looks.βΒ
I pulled him up and we both stood there, looking up at the sky. He took my hand. βWill you always love me?βΒ
βYes.βΒ
βAnd did you love me from the very beginning, the way that I loved you?βΒ
βYes, I think so. I think I did. Itβs harder for me, Dante. You have to understand that. It will always be harder for me.βΒ
βNot everything is that complicated, Ari.βΒ
βNot everything is as simple as you think it is.βΒ
He was about to say something, so I just kissed him. To shut him up, I think. But also because I liked kissing him.Β
He smiled. βYou finally figured out a way to win an argument with me.βΒ
βYup,β I said.Β
βItβll work for a while,β he said.Β
βWe donβt always have to agree,β I said.Β
βThatβs true.βΒ
βIβm glad youβre not like me, Dante. If you were like me, I wouldnβt love you.βΒ
βDid you say you love me?β He was laughing.Β
βCut it out.βΒ
βCut what out?β he said. And then he kissed me. βYou taste like the rain,β he said.Β
βI love the rain more than anything.βΒ
βI know. I want to be the rain.βΒ
βYouΒ areΒ the rain, Dante.β And I wanted to sayΒ Youβre the rain and youβre the desert and youβre the eraser thatβs making the word βlonelinessβ disappear. But it was too much to say and I would always be the guy that would say too little and Dante was the kind of guy who would always say too much.Β
ThreeΒ
We didnβt say anything on the drive back home.Β Β
Dante was quiet. Maybe too quiet. He, who was always so full of words, who knew what to say and how to say it without being afraid. And then the thought came to me that maybe Dante had always been afraidβjust like me. It was as if we had both walked into a room together and we didnβt know what to do in that room. Or maybe, or maybe, or maybe. I just couldnβt stop thinking about things. I wondered if there would ever come a time when I would just stop thinking about things.Β Β
And then I heard Danteβs voice: βI wish I were a girl.βΒ
I just looked at Dante. βWhat? Wanting to be a girl is serious business. You really wish you were a girl?βΒ
βNo. I mean, I like being a guy. I mean, I like having a penis.βΒ
βI like having one too.βΒ
And then he said, βBut, at least, if I were a girl, then we could get married and, you knowββΒ
βThatβs not everΒ gonnaΒ happen.βΒ
βI know, Ari.βΒ
βDonβt be sad.βΒ
βI wonβt be.βΒ
But I knew he would be.Β
And then I put on the radio and Dante started singing with Eric Clapton and he whispered that βMy Fatherβs Eyesβ was maybe his new favorite song. βWaiting for my prince to come,β he whispered. And he smiled.Β Β
And he asked me, βWhy donβt you ever sing?βΒ
βSinging means that youβre happy.βΒ
βYouβre not happy?βΒ
βMaybe only when Iβm with you.βΒ
I loved when I said something that made Dante smile.Β
When we pulled up in front of his house, the sun was on the verge of showing its face to the new day. And thatβs just how it feltβlike a new day. But I was thinking that maybe I would never again knowβor be sure ofβwhat the new day would bring. And I didnβt want Dante to know that there was any fear living inside me at all because he might think that I didnβt love him.Β
I would never show him that I was afraid. Thatβs what I told myself. But I knew I couldnβt keep that promise.Β Β
βI want to kiss you,β he said.Β
βI know.βΒ
He closed his eyes. βLetβs pretend weβre kissing.βΒ
I smiledβthen laughed as he closed his eyes.Β
βYouβre laughing at me.βΒ
βNo, Iβm not. Iβm kissing you.βΒ
He smiled and looked at me. His eyes were filled with such hope. He jumped out of the truck and shut the door. He stuck his head through the open window. βI see a longing in you, Aristotle Mendoza.βΒ
βA longing?βΒ
βYes. A yearning.βΒ
βA yearning?Β
He laughed. βThose words live in you. Look them up.βΒ Β
I watched him as he bounded up the steps. He moved with the grace of the swimmer that he was. There was no weight or worry in his step.Β
He turned around and waved, wearing that smile of his. I wondered if his smile would be enough.Β
God, let his smile be enough.Β
Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World is expected to be released onΒ October 12, 2021.
