The stage is set and the cast has been chosen for the up coming musical This One Girl’s Story, based on the startling true story of Sakia Gunn, a lesbian who was brutally murdered in the West Village in 2003, is scheduled to show in New York’s Musical Theater Festival.
Zonya Love Johnson (The Color Purple), Angela Grovey (Wig Out), Danielle K. Thomas (Avenue Q.), Desiree Rodgriguez (Barrio Girrl!), Jade Hicks (Rent) and Antonio Edwards Suarez (American Buffalo) have been chosen to take on the difficult roles of searching within themselves for the answers to life’s hard questions about love, sexuality and friendship, according to Playbilll.com.
One event can change a life forever, which is what four young girls from Newark discover after a night on the town in the Big City. With the anticipation of a fun and wild night they set out from Newark; not knowing what was lurking in the shadows for a lesbian couple in the West Village, according to the synopsis of the play.
Inspired by the tragic death of Sakia Gunn, this story will evoke emotional turmoil in many who see it. According to the authors, “This powerful musical combines R&B, jazz, gospel, and hip-hop to sing a tale of love and courage.”
The New York Musical Festival will run Sept. 27-Oct. 9 at the McGinn-Cazale Theater, directed by Jeremy Dorbrish, and choreography by Tanisha Scott.
