Rachel Maddow appeared on The Howard Stern Show on Sirius XM radio over the weekend and fielded questions including whether she’s ever had sex with a man — to which she unequivocally answered, “None of your business.”
Maddow said she realized she was gay when she was in high school, but she had dated boys, so Stern asked, “You never had insertion from a man?” Stern informed her that a lesbian who’s never had sex with a man is a “gold star lesbian,” but she would not say if she’d qualify. “I’m never going to tell you that. … It’s personal,” she said
She also discussed being an athlete in high school, where volleyball was her best sport; her yearbook picture, showing her with uncharacteristic long blond hair and pearls; how she came out by giving an interview to her college paper, which someone leaked to her parents before she could tell them; and the current political scene. Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, and other antigay politicians are “a living, embarrassing artifact of a way that people used to think,” she said, but the Republican Party has “not gone nuts in a way that would make them pick Rick Santorum” as a presidential candidate. If Santorum were Mitt Romney’s vice-presidential choice, she added, “Barack Obama would not have to run for reelection.”
