The Big Gay Sketch Show’s Kate McKinnon made Saturday Night Live history as the long-running sketch show’s first out lesbian featured player when she debuted this Saturday in the Sofia Vergara-hosted show.

For her first time out of the SNL gate McKinnon nabbed important air time briefly impersonating another out lesbian, Tabatha Coffey, in a Bravo spoof. But McKinnon really showed off her knack for impersonations and general hilarity in a nearly five-minute sketch in which she donned Penelope Cruz's lush mane opposite Vergara in a Pantene commercial.  McKinnon’s been skewering Cruz’s accent –something the actress herself has done in Vicky Cristina Barcelona—in her acts for quite a while, and she certainly showcased her talent in the sketch with Vergara, which you can watch here at Hulu.

A regular with the Upright Citizen’s Brigade in New York City, McKinnon has appeared on Funny or Die’s Vag Magazine, about third-wave feminists who launch a magazine. For three seasons she appeared on Logo’s Rosie O'Donnell  first gay man to appear on NBC’s iconic sketch show back during the 1985/86 season, according to AfterEllen.

produced The Big Gay Sketch Show creating memorable characters including Fitzwilliam the boy who longed for a vagina.

The comedian has also appeared in several one-woman shows including Disenchanted, “a satirical look at popular fairy tale characters years past their prime,” according to the Huffington Post.

While McKinnon is the first out lesbian to appear as a regular on SNL, Terry Sweeney became the first gay man to appear on NBC’s iconic sketch show back during the 1985/86 season, according to AfterEllen.
