A new, hourlong scripted series on MTV called Underemployed examines the post-collegiate life of a group of Millenial friends desperately trying to navigate a professional world that is much harsher than any of them imagined. The show features an ensemble cast of twenty-somethings, but is narrated by Sofie, an aspiring novelist who also happens to be Asian, and queer.Â
While the first episode doesn't see Sofie, played by Michelle Ang (South of Nowhere, Australia's The Tribe), explicitly define her sexuality, the perennial virgin does get some sexy lady-love from a lawyer she meets at work. When Sofie isn't slinging fried goodies at her day-job at Donut Girl, she's trying to find the motivation to start her first novel… So she begins writing the true story of her and her four best friends from college, whose dreams of "world domination" are given a harsh reality check in the post-economic crash working world.Â
"You grow up wanting a certain kind of life," says Sofie in the episode. "A dream of a life. But by the time you get there, that life is gone. You have to make your own life, and you have to make your own way."Â
Overall, the show is funny and sincere, and MTV should be lauded for featuring a not-straight person of color as the show's lead character. While it's still to early to tell what directions the show might take, we'll be watching. You should be, too.Â
