Saturday Night Live's big gay season finale aired this weekend, and while there was plenty of play for the boys with Stefon marrying Anderson Cooper (or did he marry Seth Meyers?), an ex-gay camp sketch, and with a commercial for Xanax for Gay Summer Weddings, there was just five seconds of screentime devoted to gay ladies. The premise of the commercial was that gay men do weddings so right it stresses the rest of us out – and that rest of us includes lesbians, since lesbians are apparently beyond low maintenance in the eyes of SNL writers (apparently those writers have never dates some of our girlfriends).
The new Xanax is “not necessary for lesbian weddings,’ as the commercial says, cutting to a spiky-haired lesbian couple played by out cast member Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant surrounded by their dozen dogs.
We get that SNL pokes fun at everyone but this stereotype of the low-maintenance lesbian couple surrounded by dogs is getting a bit tiresome. Is this joke even funny anymore or are we just humorless this Monday morning?
