By now The Voice finals votes are in the process of being tabulated and a winner is all but named. Since we’ve endorsed out, lovable, nerd rocker Michelle Chamuel since she turned three chairs at the blind auditions with a fiery rendition of “I Kissed a Girl,” we had to post her final performances.
A native of Amherst, Mass. and lead singer of the Ann Arbor based indie band Ella Riot, Michelle delivered three killer performances Monday. Although, she faced stiff competition from Blake Shelton’s remaining country artists The Swon Brothers and 16-year-old Danielle Bradbery, who have rabid fan bases.
To kick it off Coach Usher’s golden child Michelle sang her badass version of Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble,” a moment Usher called “defining” when she first sang it a few weeks ago. It doesn’t hurt that Taylor praised the original performance. Here’s hoping some of Taylor’s fans came out to vote for Michelle.
Each finalist sang with their coach, and Michelle and Usher did a version of U2’s “One” that was quite frankly adorable. But for her solo number of the evening Michelle tackled Annie Lennox’s monster of a single –“Why.” Despite the reprisal of the cheesy mirror theme that Usher began for Michelle back when she sang and apparently showed her “True Colors.” Although -- just a caveat -- no one has really said which true colors she and Usher are addressing. Is it that she’s shy, that she sports thick-framed glasses, that she’s a self-confessed nerd, that she once spoke with AfterEllen about being out? Nobody really knows, but Usher loves the mirror theme, and thus it was invoked for the third time this season.
Fingers crossed that Michelle takes home the prize tonight, but she is up against some very loyal country fans.
