Adrianne Palicki may not have been happy that NBC passed on her Wonder Woman TV pilot, but that hasn’t slowed her down. The actress as already signed up to fill the combat boots of another strong female—and gay icon—as Lady Jaye in the live-action G.I. Joe sequel currently titled G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes.

Fans will recall Lady Jaye was one of the main cast members of the 1980s animated series, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. She was also most likely the one female team member most effected by the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. Of course she was set up with a straight love interest, but with her short hair, combat boots, baggy fatigues, and preferred choice of phallic spears as weapons, she wasn’t fooling anyone. Lady Jaye’s lesbian leaning tendencies certainly made her an icon for more than one gay girl growing up in the 1980s.

With Palicki moving from the role of gay icon Wonder Woman to the first—obviously closeted—lesbian of G.I. Joe, could the young actress be on her way to gaining a loyal gay following herself? Time will tell if the Friday Night Lights series star will end up an icon herself and follow in the footsteps of queer idols such as Lynda Carter and Sigourney Weaver, but it appears that she’s well on her way.

The film is set to land in theatres on August 10, 2012.
