Beloved Glee characters Rachel, Kurt and Finn will “Kiss Today Goodbye” come graduation and won’t return for another season of the juggernaut show. Creator Ryan Murphy has revealed that the characters played by series regulars Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, and Cory Monteith will be graduating at the end of the upcoming season and won’t be returning for season 4.
Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter, "You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year.”
The news follows earlier rumors that other cast members, namely Chord Overstreet, wouldn’t be returning when Glee returns in the fall, and while his departure from the show hasn’t been confirmed, Murphy said “more characters are leaving than are staying.” The man behind the ratings smash wouldn’t reveal who was on the list of characters exiting the show—intent on keeping us guessing until the big reveal set for the September 20th season premiere.
However, Michele seems to be in high spirits despite the news of her departure. She responded to the news via Twitter saying, “We always knew we’d graduate in real time. It’s all part of the plan and it’s all good! It’s going to make Season 3 amazing!!! To Gleeks everywhere, you’re in my heart now and forever. Love u all!!! This is just the beginning!!”
With a thriving career on Broadway before the show began, it’s safe to say this won’t be the last we’ll hear from Lea Michele.
