Broadway star Daphne Rubin-Vega lends her voice to the fight for marriage equality in New York with two new videos in English and Spanish for the Human Rights Campaign.
Rubin-Vega appears in the eighth and ninth installments of the New Yorkers for Marriage Equality video series. Previous videos from HRC have featured Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and actress Julianne Moore, with many others and more to come including Whoopi Goldberg and Joan Rivers.
Rubin-Vega, who originated the role of Mimi Marquez in Rent, delivers the first Spanish language video in the series. She says, “There is nothing more important to me than the love and commitment that a family brings. That’s why I support equal marriage rights for all.”
Last year, the marriage equality bill failed to pass in the state senate by eight votes. Although control of the senate in 2011 remains uncertain with a recount of three races underway, advocates are hopeful of another vote next year, emboldened by high-profile defeats of three senators who voted against marriage equality.
