Sachin Bhatt is making an impact in Hollywood.
Beyond the typical sexy moments in his mainstream gay projects Queer as Folk and Boots, Bhatt stars in groundbreaking sex scenes that deeply resonated with the LGBTQ+ community.
In the Peacock series Queer as Folk, Bhatt (Ali) and Eric Graise (Marvin) share a passionate scene that beautifully highlights disability, race, and sex work. Embodying much-needed on-screen diversity, Marvin is a bilateral amputee who hires Ali as an empathetic, professional sex worker. The two share a powerful connection, enjoying sex without any of the typical anxieties or insecurities often seen on television.
In the Netflix series Boots, Major Wilkinson (Bhatt) and Sgt. Sullivan (Max Parker) share a secret queer romance that threatens to destroy everything they have worked for. Set in 1990, the story follows the closeted couple as they navigate the risk of a dishonorable discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps if caught having any type of sexual relationship. Their intimate sex scene showcases one of their hidden encounters, offering a poignant representation that deeply resonates with viewers who have struggled with coming out.
"It's always liberating and nerve-racking! I'm not used to being shirtless or nude, but I have to represent the hairy guys out there. Back in the day, they would always clean shaven or really trimmed down. I'm just trying to keep it real! Regardless of your age or ethnicity, social circles in the queer community can be challenging. It's hard to not compare yourself to other people," Bhatt tells Out.
Now, Bhatt is tackling another queer role that focuses on the importance of chosen family in the new film In Between. The talented actor plays Ezra, a very loyal and supportive best friend to Nick (Nicholas Molencupp), who is battling self-esteem issues. Ezra serves as the voice of reason and offers crucial advice to help Nick love the skin he's in.
"It deals with mental health, body image, and judgement within the LGBTQ+ community. This group of friends is super supportive of Nick's journey loving himself and finding that self-acceptance. As our voices are being suppressed, this is my active rebellion by telling queer stories and sharing our lives. We're here, queer, and staying here."
LGBTQ+ stories are pivotal in today's hostile political climate, especially since many shows such as Boots are getting canceled after a very short run. However, Bhatt is grateful that the Netflix series was even released to begin with and that it continues to resonate with queer audiences.
"It's super exciting! It was such a beautifully told story. There were so many characters to connect to. I'm happy that it resonated with so many people. Everyone's so sweet in that show. I love playing characters that show the world that we are the same. Our stories matter! It's been a privilege and I'm going to keep doing it."
