Same-sex civil union supporters in Hawaii are “optimistic” that a bill will pass in the state during the upcoming legislative session, according to website The State Column.

Democratic Governor Neil Abercrombie is expected to support the proposal, it is simply a matter of Hawaii state lawmakers passing a bill.

A report on Hawaiian television station KITV revealed that “several lawmakers who oppose civil unions refused to be interviewed because they expect the controversial bill to pass the legislature easily this year perhaps in the first few days of the 2011 session. ” This comes after Hawaiian lawmakers passed a bill during the final hours of the 2010 legislative session. Hawaii Republican governor Linda Lingle vetoed the measure, ending any chance of the measure passing.

The state Legislature plans to reconvene this month, so supporters of the measure are ramping up their effort to push for support of the measure.
