The debut album from boygenius is here, and with it, a short film directed by none other than Kristen Stewart.

The music group, made up of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker, put out an EP in 2018, but the record marks their first studio album together. The 12-track album is already being praised by critics for finding a way to merge the styles of all three solo artists into something colorfully collaborative and distinct.

But perhaps of even more immediate interest is the short film that was released alongside of it. Titled simply the film on YouTube, it includes three of their new songs, with each accompanying video centering around one of the trio.

“$20” sees Baker fixing up a car, “Emily I’m Sorry” focuses on Bridgers, standing in the middle of a monster truck rally with no audience, and Dacus wanders a mostly-empty house in “True Blue.” All three musicians appear in each video, culminating in wistful make-out sessions as they messily paint the interior of the final video blue.

The lo-fi aesthetic matches the sound, while also feeling true to Stewart’s own creativity.

“It was a knockout, fall-down honor to be asked to try to distill the incredible fireworks show that pops up when these three come together,” Stewart said at the film’s premiere Thursday night. “I am such an enormous fan. I wish I had them to look up to when I was a kid.”

This marks Stewart’s third foray into directing music videos, having previously taken on “Down Side of Me” for Chvrches and “Take Me to the South” for Sage + the Saints. She is expected to make her feature directorial debut in the near future with The Chronology of Water.

Meanwhile, the record is currently available on all the usual listening platforms, with boygenius setting out on a North American tour in April.
