
Trans people are still not as visible in the media as they should be, and that exclusion is even more prevalent when it comes to the music industry.
While certain groundbreaking shows like Pose, Euphoria, Veneno, and RuPaul’s Drag Race have been featuring the stories of trans women and men, documentaries like Disclosure still underscore the wide gap in terms of trans representation in mainstream media – not only the long history behind those exclusionary measures, but also how Hollywood is still very behind even as of 2024 Things are arguably even worse in film, with Oscar-buzzing movies centering around trans stories being told and portrayed by cisgender actors most of the time — or totally ignoring the ones that feature trans actors.
Breaking into the music industry isn’t easy for a lot of people, but that has proven to be even more true for trans artists. Thankfully, though, things are slowly starting to shift and more trans musicians are getting some visibility. In the meantime, the LGBTQ+ community will continue to push for talented, charismatic, and inspiring trans artists to reach mainstream audiences in music as well.
