First of all, be warned - this article is spoiler central for The 100, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Orphan Black, and Arrow.
Second of all, as you probably know already, last night The 100 gave us the Clexa sex scene we've all been waiting for between Grounder commander Lexa and Commander of Death Clarke. But wait, it gets bad real fast! In the same episode Lexa was brutally killed by a stray bullet, and after a year of crushing on everything this show's done, I was left with a little whimper of sadness and a lot of confusion. Oh, how I trumpeted praise of The 100 and its strong queer leads to the high heavens ( / literally on Pride - same thing). I own a damn t-shirt; I'm that dedicated. And I'm even someone who was at peace with Lexa's impending death. There's only so many times a character can say "I'm probably gonna die," before you need to acknowledge they're probably gonna die, but not like this. I didn't think after Buffy I'd have to watch yet another one of my favorite powerful lesbian characters get shot to death in her own home by a stray bullet. This simply isn't fair anymore.
Now, to be fair and equal, creator/executive producer Jason Rothenberg and co. are insisting this has nothing to do with any character's sexuality and more to do with a combination of plot development and Lexa actress Alycia Debnam-Carey's schedule on Fear the Walking Dead. I'm also definitely sure they didn't vengefully kill the lesbian just to do it. But you know what? It still sucks, and it's important to talk about why, because as long as queer characters aren't allowed to be happy (the history is extensive), we'll be angrily writing about it until they are. Here are 5 reasons this mega-fan's loyalty to The 100 hangs in the balance.
