A modern horror classic is getting the prequel treatment with Orphan: First Kill.
13 years after the original Orphan movie, the highly-anticipated new film sees Isabelle Fuhrman reprise her role as the terrifying Esther Coleman.
“I felt like I was revisiting an old friend. I really got to dive into a more human side to her and have her be a little bit less of a mystery. [She's] an antihero that you could root for and like in the first one, think that she’s terrible. You don’t know what she’s going to do next,” Fuhrman said of her reprisal of the role.
In Orphan: First Kill, Esther escapes an Estonian psychiatric facility and travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family.
Julia Stiles plays the mother of the missing child and notices some odd behavior as Esther joins the family.
“A detective appears and tells her that the daughter she thought had gone missing is coming back,” Stiles said of the plot. “She can’t quite put her figure on it, but there’s something wrong with Esther. [Esther] has kind of met her match, [so] how much longer can she trick everybody?”
To this day, horror fans still can’t get over the surprising twist in Orphan. To avoid any spoilers, Fuhrman hinted that the prequel also has a mind-blowing twist in store.
“Just like the first movie, you fall into this world and you get to follow Esther and her life this time, rather than the family’s life. You realize very quickly things aren't what they seem yet again. When I read the script for the first time, my own jaw hit the floor,” Fuhrman said.
At only 10 years old, Fuhrman cemented herself as a horror icon in the original Orphan and shares her excitement that Esther gets to wreak havoc once again.
“As a child when I played this role, I so was trying to be the adult version of Esther. In this one, I really got to revisit what it was like to be a child again.”
Orphan: First Kill premieres this Friday, August 19th. Catch the film in theaters, on digital, or streaming on Paramount+.
