Rural Community Protests Church's Transphobic, Homophobic Sign

The community isn't interested in the church spreading a negative message.

A California church’s provocative anti-gay signage isn’t sitting well with the community.

Trinity Bible Presbyterian Church sits just outside the rural town of Weed, California. Shortly after Christmas, Pastor Justin Hoke changed the sign out front to read:

“Bruce Jenner is still a man. Homosexuality is still sin. The culture may change. The Bible does not.”

Hoke posted the image to Facebook, adding this comment a few days later:

“The response we're receiving from this sign proves that it was posted way too late. If a conservative mountain farming community is no longer a safe place to call sin, sin. Then is anywhere in this country still safe for real Christians?”

But discomfort with the sign is coming from within that farming community, proving that it may not be as conservative as Hoke thinks — or if it is, they’re still not okay with the aggressive anti-gay, anti-trans stance the church is broadcasting to the members of the community.

A small protest was organized by Weed residents this weekend, though it was one born out of support for the LGBTQ community rather than anger at the church.

"Just a community effort to show that we actually care about all members of our community, regardless of orientation gender or other aspects of identity that make them unique," protestor Robyn Vandiver told KTVL.

She and other protestors — some part of the LGBTQ community, some simply allies — brought rainbow paraphernalia and signs of affirmation for any queer residents of Weed that may pass by to see.

“Keep it in your church. If it’s not something hopeful for the community, if it’s not loving, keep it in your church,” protest organizer Charolette Kalayjian told the local NBC station. “Keep it in your house. Keep it – don’t share it with everybody.”

Her message for the church echoes what LGBTQ people have been told for decades — do what you want, just not in front of me. Only this time, the onus to keep your mouth shut is being put on the people doing the bullying.

But Hoke isn’t interested in the protest, or what anyone thinks of his stance.

“The church has lost its saltiness and I fully expect to get as much or more flack from the visible church as I am getting from the world,” he added to Facebook. "The culture does not determine truth God does."

While he claims he usually changes the sign every couple of weeks, Hoke now plans to keep this one up longer. Gotta rebuke those sinners, after all.
