Amazon Censors Gay and Lesbian Books

The web is abuzz amid accusations that Amazon.com removed hundreds of gay and lesbian book books from the sales rankings lists, including the children's book classic about lesbian moms, Heather Has Two Mommies and Ellen Degeneres' autobiography.

The web is abuzz amid accusations that Amazon.com removed hundreds of gay and lesbian books from the sales rankings lists.

A customer service rep responded to writer Mark R. Probst’s query concerning the missing titles -- including the newly released Transgressions by Erastes and False Colors by Alex Beecroft -- on Sunday explaining, "In consideration of our entire customer base, we exclude 'adult' material from appearing in some searches and best seller lists."

News sites quickly learned that this “adult” applies to clearly tame material, such as Ellen Degeneres autobiography and the children’s book Heather Has Two Mommies. While clearly adult material, such as Jenna Jamison and Ron Jeremy’s autobiographies and Playboy: The Complete Centerfolds, a coffee table book containing over 600 naked women are clearly ranked.

Twitter tweets blasted the bookseller under the tag ‘#amazonfail’ and by Sunday evening, a spokesperson for Amazon told the LA Times"There was a glitch with our sales rank feature that is in the process of being fixed," she wrote. "We're working to correct the problem as quickly as possible."
