One half of New Zealand's beloved lesbian comedic country music duo, The Topp Twins, made history as the first-ever lesbian to appear on the cover of New Zealand's weekly Woman's Day magazine.

Lynda Topp married her partner of nine years, Donna Luxton, on Saturday in a "true country hoe-down with cowboy hats, boots and plaid shirts alongside the  bridal bouquet and wedding cake," reports Australian blog SameSame. "A miniature pony plated ringbearer, trotting down the aisle to Shania Twain's classic 'You're Still The One.'"

New Zealand's Parliament is on the verge of legalizing marriage equality, and Topp told Woman's Day she was eager to make it official with her wife.

"Let's get one thing straight," Topp told the magazine. "This is not a civil union — it's a marriage. We just happen to be a little bit ahead of everyone."

The Topp Twins (Lynda and Jools) are a beloved national treasure, and the subject of a renowned 2011 documentary called The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls, which followed the comedic, singing, yodeling lesbian twin sisters as their unique brand of political activism helped change New Zealand's cultural landscape.

Woman's Day, which touts itself as New Zealand's number-one weekly magazine, heralded the news and congratulated the couple.

"With New Zealand one step closer to making gay marriages legal, the timing of this week’s cover story is uncanny," said editor Sido Kitchin. "The Topp Twins are national treasures and have brought Kiwis so much joy. Woman’s Day wishes Lynda a lifetime of love and happiness with her new bride."

SameSame also notes that this month, Australian magazine Women's Weekly featured its first lesbian cover girl — none other than Ellen DeGeneres.
