A Minnesota-based antigay Christian ministry run by former Christian rocker Bradlee Dean is suing MSNBC and Rachel Maddow in excess of $50 million for defamation over statements she made on her talk show suggesting Dean and his ministry advocate killing homosexuals, according to WorldNetDaily.
Last May The Rachel Maddow Show ran an edited version of a quote Dean had posted on his You Can Run But You Cannot Hide ministry’s website. Here is the quote that ran on Maddow's show:
"The Muslims are calling for the execution of homosexuals in America. This was just released yesterday and it shows you that they themselves are upholding the laws that are even in the Bible of the Judeo-Christian God. But they seem to be more moral than even the American Christians do because these people are livid about enforcing their laws. They know homosexuality's an abomination. If America won't enforce the laws, God will raise up a foreign enemy to do just that."
Dean’s camp has said that the quote is an edited version of his original message intended to urge the Christian community to take the radical leftist homosexual agenda more seriously.
Dean’s attorney Larry Klayman, founder of Freedom Watch, said that the lawsuit is not about the $50 million in restitution but rather a “matter of principle.” "We need more Bradlee Deans in the world and hateful left wing television commentators must be made to respect not only his mission but the law,” Klayman said.
The ministry in an announcement also accused the “progressive left” of attacking Dean in an attempt to harm Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, who has praised Dean for promoting traditional values for the nation’s youth.
MSNBC responded to the lawsuit with the statement, “This suit is baseless and we stand by our reporting,” according to Mediabistro.com.
