A Trans Woman Murdered in 2014 Is FINALLY Getting the Justice She Deserves

It's about time.

Although it might not be an end to the anti-trans legislation that many states like North Carolina are seeking to inact, members of the trans community are finally getting some of the justice they deserve. Back in June 2014Yaz'min Schancez was shot and burned to death by 47-year-old Terry Brady in Fort Meyers, Florida. Since then, no ruling was made—but all that's just changed.

He was recently convicted of second-degree murder (which means either "an intentional killing that is not premeditated or planned, nor committed in a reasonable 'heat of passion,'" or "a killing caused by dangerous conduct and the offender's obvious lack of concern for human life"), and is set to be sentenced on Oct. 31.

Schancez's stepmother spoke about her relief that this nightmare is finally over to the Naples Daily News, saying:

"We’re all kind of relieved it’s over with. It’s been going on for years, so it’s kind of relieving, finally getting it over with and not having to go back and see his face in court anymore."

While the epidemic murders of trans women (especially trans women of color) still plague the country every year, it's good to know that at least this ruling has helped one family, and the Florida community deal with such a tragic loss.
