Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Offers Bisexuals the Ultimate Coming Out Anthem
In last week's episode of the CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, audiences were treated to something never before seen on television: A middle-aged, average dude named Darryl came out as bisexual in a song performed in front of a giant bi pride flag.
While it might seem too good to be true, I assure you it is not. Here's proof:
In a society that constantly erases, belittles, or stereotypes bisexuals and bisexuality, this 2-minute song had bisexuals everywhere ready to jump up on the nearest table to dance and sing along.
Lyrics like "Not gonna hide it, not gonna lie. I’m a bi kinda guy, there’s no reason to be shy," and "My oh my, it’s a fact I can’t deny. I’m bi, bi, bi until the day I die," resonate so hard with bisexual audiences, it's incredible.
Even better? Lyrics that address and subvert bisexual stereotypes.
Think that bisexuality isn't real and Darryl might actually just be gay? He'll set you (metaphorically) straight:
"Now some may say, 'Oh you’re just gay! Why don’t you just go gay all the way?' But that’s not it, ‘cause bi’s legit."
And if you think bisexuals are all sluts who live for sex and are incapable of ever being monogamous? He has a response to that, as well:
"And one more thing, I tell you what. Being bi does not imply that you’re a player or a slut. Sure, I like sex. But I’m no ho; I take things slow until I feel at ease."
Amen, Darryl. Because though there is nothing wrong with being a slut, it is wrong to think that all bisexuals are sluts simply because they're bisexual.
The importance of these two minutes can't be overstated, and it's not just because of the lyrics and the prominence of the beautiful bi pride flag (though those are two huge factors). It's also vital because of who this character is.
Not only are bisexual characters on TV rare, but bisexual male characters are even more rare. The rarest thing of them all: In a TV Land full of Frank Underwoods and Tyrell Wellicks, here stands one lone bi guy who's just a regular guy. He's not manipulative or opportunistic or lowkey evil. He's just your average dude, and it's beautiful.
The song and its surrounding context were so important and groundbreaking, in fact, that it led one Buzzfeed writer to name Darryl "The Most Important Bisexual Character in Television History."
If nothing else, this moment has Crazy Ex-Girlfriend set to record on the DVR's of bisexuals everywhere.
We need more Darryl. We need more songs about his newfound bisexuality we can sing along to. And we need them now.
