It’s been out in the ether for some time that Lifetime was working on a reboot of the classic dramedy Steel Magnolias featuring and all African-American cast, and now word is out that Queen Latifah will executive produce and star in the film that features a heavy -hitting cast including Adepero Oduye, star of last year's acclaimed lesbian-themed indie Pariah, according to Deadline.
Steel Magnolias originated as an off-Broadway play (written by Good Christian Bitches scribe Robert Harling) that become a 1989 feature film starring Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis and Darryl Hannah.
The remake stars Latifah as M’Lynn, Alfre Woodard as Ouiser, Phylicia Rashad as Clairee, Jill Scott as Truvee, Oduye as Anelle and Condola Rashad as Shelby.
The film, executive produced by the team of Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, whose list of LGBT adjacent projects include Smash, Chicago and Hairspray.
The film will be adapted from a script by Iron Jawed Angels writer Sally Robinson, according to Deadline.
