Grey's Anatomy Season 8 Ends with a Crash - And a Bang

For the millions of dedicated fans of Grey’s Anatomy, last night’s Season 8 finale, entitled “Flight,” was probably the hardest episode to watch during the run of the longstanding, hit hospital drama.

SPOILER ALERT

For the millions of dedicated fans of Grey’s Anatomy, last night’s Season 8 finale, entitled “Flight,” was probably the hardest episode to watch during the run of the longstanding, hit hospital drama.

After it was over, I, and I’m sure countless others, were left to ponder the exact definition of the term DRAMA. This show has certainly set the bar high in that department, and it has at least two more seasons to keep our blood pressure boiling.

Together, the young, aspiring surgeons of Seattle Grace have survived (and sometimes have not survived) a catastrophic ferry accident, a bomb threat, a giant sink hole swallowing a significant portion of downtown, a hospital shooting spree, plenty of overturned ambulances, and now a plane crash.

I think Christina Yang (Sandra Oh) said it best last night when she said, “I’ll tell ya one thing, when we get out of here, I’m getting the hell away from Seattle Grace Mercy DEATH and I’m never looking back.” Good call, Yang.

But seriously, last night, fans of the show were forced to say goodbye to two integral characters, Lexie “little” Grey (Chyler Leigh) and Teddy Altman (Kim Raver). In an interview with E! show-runner Shonda Rhimes confirmed that both characters were in fact departing, while saying that both actresses were ready to go, and they both felt like it was their time to move on.

Lexie died a tragic death, after being crushed under the weight of the airplane fuselage. In a touching scene with Mark (Eric Dane), the on-again-off-again couple were able to say goodbye and more importantly, they were finally able to say “I love you” to one another. Oh, the drama.

Meanwhile, back in Seattle, Altman, preparing to turn down a chief position in order to remain loyal to Chief Hunt (Kevin McKidd), was fired. The reason…Hunt felt that Altman needed to take the position at the other facility, and that the new opportunity would ultimately be the best thing for his friend.

If there’s one thing that Rhimes, and the rest of her writing staff do well, it’s constructing the perfect cliffhanger finale. And last night was no exception; they successfully left us all hanging. Seriously, why not make it a 2-hour finale?

We were left with the core of the passengers on the ill-fated flight: Derek (Patrick Dempsey), Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Yang, Mark, and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) responsive and alert, but clinging to life in the Idaho wilderness.

Being a fan of Calzona, I was happy that Arizona survived the initial impact, but I fear it’s not looking good. Arizona is pretty banged up, bone protruding from her leg, blood oozing from her head and she’s coughing up blood.

Meanwhile, poor Callie (Sara Ramirez), lying in bed, dressed in sexy lingerie, awaits her wife’s return. She is unaware that her beloved is not returning home any time soon, if at all. Oh the irony…. Callie, a stellar orthopedic surgeon could treat her ladylove successfully if they were only together, good one Rhimes…well played.

With reports that Capshaw and Dane are still not signed on for next season, could it be possible that they would both be casualties at the start of Season 9? After the drama we’ve witnessed for 8+ seasons, anything is possible in Shondaland.
