American Idol winner and country star Carrie Underwood announced her support for marriage equality last week, and now she has come under fire by some fans. In response GLAAD has launched a Twitter campain to show support for Underwood.
Underwood told UK’s The Independent, "As a married person myself, I don't know what it's like to be told I can't marry somebody I love, and want to marry. I can't imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love."
Underwood, who was raised Baptist, and her husband, pro hockey player Mike Fischer, attend a nondenominational church that welcomes and accepts LGBT people. "Our church is gay friendly," she told The Independent. "Above all, God wanted us to love others. It's not about setting rules, or [saying] 'everyone has to be like me'. No. We're all different. That's what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It's not up to me to judge anybody."
Since the interview, Underwood has faced attacks on her support of marriage equality. Scotty Smith of Franklin, Tennessee’s Christ Community Church told CBN that she has a “broken understanding” of the Bible.
GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) has started a campaign to counter the attacks made against Underwood on Twitter. Show your support by tweeting to Carrie Underwood (@carrieunderwood) using the hashtag #supportcarrie.
