Janelle Monáe is finally gearing up to release new music, and we could not be more ready!
It’s been nearly five years since the singer dropped her third, life-changing album Dirty Computer, along with a 46-minute film set to the music about a totalitarian, homophobic society. Since then, while Monáe has blessed us with their appearance in projects like Glass Onion and Homecoming, the only singles they have released have been tied to film or charity projects.
But that all changes next week. On Wednesday, Monáe announced a new song called “Float,” slated to premiere on Thursday, February 16. She also dropped a preview of the song on her socials:
“Y’all won. FLOAT. 2/16.🕴🏾”— Janelle Monáe👽🚆🤖🚀🪐 (@Janelle Monáe👽🚆🤖🚀🪐) 1675882376
We had a feeling this was coming, as Monáe did some hilarious trolling leading up to the news.
A fan joked that Monáe was “finally showing off how fine she is instead of dressing like the monopoly man” during her appearance at the Grammys, prompting the “Make Me Feel” singer to joke back that we wouldn’t get any new music — or a tour — due to the tweet going viral.

The back and forth actually wound up providing a new aesthetic for the promotion of “Float,” incredibly enough.

Despite their threats, Monáe thankfully isn’t actually making us wait any longer for this next highly anticipated phase of her career, which is no doubt going to be more incredible artistry from someone who just does not miss.
