It's 2025, but it seems like some people still have plenty of opinions about Reneé Rapp first identifying as bisexual and then coming out as a lesbian as she grew her career as a pop star and actress. Thankfully, the "Leave Me Alone" singer isn't one to mince words.
The Mean Girls (2024) star delivered an impassioned speech on Instagram live on Thursday, May 29. Since then, fans have been sharing clips of Reneé Rapp clapping back at critics who are still discussing her sexuality and how it's evolved over the years.
"Whenever I talk about changing my identity from publicly bisexual to publicly a lesbian, I usually am pretty good about letting it go," she says in one clip.
Rapp says that people are welcome to write their "think pieces" about her sexuality. However, one particular piece of commentary "pissed [her] the fuck off."

"This one was like, 'Well, that's not fair to lesbians, if you said that you felt more like a lesbian in that moment, because that invalidates people who have always liked women,'" Rapp is seen explaining in a video. "Did you not fucking hear me when I just said I'm a lesbian? Did you decide to stop listening in that moment? Shut the fuck up."
Rapp continued to say that she's "pissed" because this line of thinking is why people feel unsafe to come out. It's a hindrance to the community not to allow people to "change and to evolve and grow and grow into themselves."
The pop star also got teary-eyed at one point, discussing her experiences growing up in the South, and recalling how there weren't many opportunities for her to just be herself. "I felt like, for so long, I had to be bisexual because I had to assume closeness to a sexuality that could lead me to being with a man," Rapp explained. "But that is something that I struggled with for such a fucking long time."
She went on, "So for you to get in your fucking comments, and my fucking comments, and say that it's 'not fair' that I decided to start identifying as a lesbian because you didn't like the fucking way I went about it… Fuck you."
Rapp ended her speech saying that it was too close to Pride Month to start making her feel mad. And we know that's right!
@reneerapp writing this then coming out as a lesbian i contain multitudes
For context, Rapp identified as an out bisexual person at the beginning of her career, and many songs on her first album were about attraction to men.
In February 2024, however, Rapp came out as a lesbian in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. She then posted a TikTok video with her song, "Tummy Hurts," with a caption that read: "Writing this, then coming out as a lesbian, I contain multitudes."
Reneé Rapp's upcoming album, Bite Me, is scheduled to drop on Friday, August 1.
